The Ritz Carlton Jakarta Mega Kuningan, Indonesia

Introduction

We had booked the Ritz Carlton Jakarta Mega Kuningan to achieve our category 4 free night certificate on our recent trip to Indonesia. It cost us approximately IDR 3,000,000 (~ USD 210) per night. Our package included daily breakfast for 2 guests at their Asia Restaurant, daily dinner for 2 guests at the Asia Restaurant along with 2 glasses of wine.

Check In

We arrived at around 9 PM in Jakarta and took a Golden Bird Taxi from the Airport to the Hotel. The Hotel is located in South Jakarta and it took us approximately 40 minutes for the 30 km journey. The Hotel lobby is beautiful and we were offered a welcome drink .

There was hardly any sight of other guests at this late hour and the hotel looked picturesque. The Lobby has plenty of seating space and is very well laid out.

After completing check in formalities we were quickly escorted to our room.

The Room

We were celebrating our anniversary during this trip and the Hotel had decorated our room. We had booked the grand room which was quite spacious (63 square metres). The dessert in our room was one of the best we have ever had.

Our room had a large walk in bathroom with a separate shower and tub area.

The bathroom had a luxurious feel to it and had all the amenities one could wish for

The room was well stocked with plenty of food and drinks in the mini bar. The room also had a complimentary selection of fresh fruits for the health conscious traveler.

My personal favourite was the complimentary dark and milk chocolates combo which were kept in the room daily. The hotel is located in the business district and while the views from the room are not spectacular, they are not too bad either. I also like the fact that most hotels are now equipping their rooms with direct high speed USB charging ports. Saves us the hassle of carrying international adapters.

In Room Dining

This is probably the first hotel in the world outside of India that had two pages dedicated to Vegetarian Food. A lot of hotels do provide vegetarian food but it involves lengthy conversations with the restaurant staff or the chef directly. Felt really great to know that we could dine in the comfort of our room without too much of a hassle.

The Food

While the hotel has multiple restaurants, we dined only at their Asia restaurant as we had booked a hotel package. The restaurant closes at 10 PM and we had to make a dash for it on our first night at the hotel. We were hoping to find some vegetarian food (had not gone through their menu till then) and to our delight Chef Aris made some Indian vegetarian food for us. The buffet was anyway about to close and we really did not see much vegetarian choices there.

Chole (chickpeas), Dal (Lentils), Roti (Flat bread) and Basmati Rice

The food was delicious and was a welcome change from the Indonesia and Italian vegetarian options we had explored in the past 3 days.  The restaurant is massive and has multiple seating options. You can imagine the size of the buffet from the picture below.

Breakfast was equally impressive. The spread was really massive and we were again surprised to see a dedicated Indian counter there as well. Chef Rory made great aloo (potato) paranthas for us.

The hotel had set up an exclusive table for us and offered us complimentary drinks as well. The breakfast was really good. I really liked the vegetarian sushi.

We were able to experience the buffet dinner the next night in all its glory. The choice of food on offer made it really difficult to choose plus there was something special for us (more on that below).

Indonesian Vegetarian Food

We requested the chefs to prepare authentic vegetarian Indonesian dishes for us for dinner and breakfast and boy did they surprise us. At dinner Chef Aris prepared a traditional Indonesian dinner for us.

Tempe Cabe Hijau (Vegetarian)

I really enjoyed the dinner but in all fairness it was the dessert that stole my heart. I am definitely coming back here again to sample the dessert. One of them was made of coconut and was exquisite.

For breakfast, Chef Rory had prepared a special Indonesian Vegetarian dish for us. They were a bit on the spicy side and that is really saying something coming from an Indian Couple. The food was enjoyable.

Tahu Goreng IsI (Vegetarian)
Sambal Goreng Kentang (Spicy Potatoes Mix)

We really loved the way the Chef’s went out of their way to prepare something for us. It made us feel welcome and they genuinely wanted us to have a great time.

Amenities

The hotel has a very impressive gym. It is comparable in size to a professional gym. It even had a bosu ball which we use sometimes.

The Spa at the hotel was amazing. I got a facial done and it felt really great. There was a lot of rush at the Spa so book your slot well in advance. I had asked Ginger tea with honey which was not in their menu and a staff member went to the hotel’s kitchen to get it for me.

The hotel has a full length swimming pool which was completely empty in the sweltering heat.

There was a table tennis and a dart board for sports lovers.

The Staff

The Staff at the hotel was exceptional and took great care of us. We felt at home and welcomed right from check in to check out. The dining staff and the chef’s deserve a special mention for taking such great care of us. Housekeeping was spot on and cleanliness standards were high.

Final Verdict

This is an incredible hotel in a great location. This was our first experience in a Ritz Carlton hotel and we were very impressed. At 200 US dollars a night, this was an absolute steal. Will definitely stay here again the next time we are in Jakarta. Check out the youtube video for a more detailed review.
